Classes

We offer classes on the three different types of Ikenobo:

Japanese flower arrangment in the Rikka style

Rikka

In Rikka, the flowers, branches, and glasses represent the different elements of a landscape. These elements are rivers, mountains, clouds, villages, a path and a waterfall. With these elements a natural landscape is created in a single vase where all things in nature are reflected. This style has strict rules that govern the placement of the seven to nine elements. The main elements are always upright with a noticeable neckline. While creating this landscape in our class, you will learn the importance of understanding the laws of nature and creating harmony.

We offer this class every
Wednesday from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm.

Japanese flower arrangment in the Shoka style

Shoka

In 1789, the 39th Headmaster Ikenobo Senjo created a simple form of Rikka called Shoka. While Rikka seeks beauty in the harmony among plants, Shoka focuses on the Shussho or inner beauty of a plant in the plant’s life. Shussho is unique to each plant and this beauty is discovered through various stages of the plant’s growth. In our class, you will learn how to elegantly and gracefully express the plant’s life based and its inner beauty, all arranged in a single vase.

We offer this class every
Friday from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm.

Japanese flower arrangment in the Jiyuka style

Jiyuka (freestyle)

Jiyuka focuses on the knowledge, experience, and feelings of the artist as they encounter the materials. It is less structured then the other styles and more adaptable to modern spaces. A sculptural effect is achieved, in this style, by recognizing and using the four shapes all materials. These shapes are line, area, dot, and mass. In our class, you will learn how to combine these elements in various combinations not governed by season or function while reflecting modern life.

We offer this class every
Saturday from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm.
